Where to print lost pet flyers today

Home printers, office supply stores, shipping stores and libraries can all do it. Here is how to choose and what to bring.

The short answer

The quickest places to print lost pet flyers are your own printer, a neighbor’s printer, a public library, or a print counter at an office supply or shipping store such as FedEx Office, Staples, Office Depot or The UPS Store. If it is late at night, use a home printer for your first ten copies, hang those, and get the larger batch when a shop opens. Do not wait for a perfect print run. What matters in the first hours is having some copies up near the place your pet was last seen. Prices and services vary by location, so call before you drive.

Start with black and white

A black and white flyer almost always costs less per page and stays readable. If the page was designed for it, a solid black phone number stands out as well as a red one. Print one test page, then check that the photo still shows the markings. A pale dog on a light background can turn to a gray blur, so if yours does, switch to a crisper photo before you run fifty copies. Color helps for the handful of posters you put at busy intersections or in a vet’s window, where the coat color is part of how people recognize your pet.

Home or borrowed printers

Set the paper size to Letter, turn off any fit-to-page option and print at 100 percent, also called actual size, so nothing is cut off at the edges. If your ink is low, use the draft setting only as a last resort, because it can wash out the phone number. No printer? Post in your neighborhood group asking if anyone can print 20 pages tonight and send them the PDF. People are usually glad to do something concrete, and this gets you a helper who now knows what your pet looks like.

Print counters and self-service machines

National chains generally offer two routes. You can walk in with the PDF on your phone or a USB drive and use a self-service machine, or you can upload the file on the store’s website ahead of time and collect it when it is ready. The upload route avoids waiting behind the machine, and staff can check the size for you. Tell the counter you want single-sided Letter on plain paper unless you have a reason to pay for more. Ask for the file to be printed at actual size, and check the first copy before they run the rest.

Libraries and other free or low-cost options

Most public libraries have printers, though you may need a library card or a guest pass, and there may be a page limit, so ask. Other places worth asking are your vet’s front desk, the shelter you are filing a report with, a local pet store, a church office, a community center, or your workplace if your manager agrees. None of these are obliged to help, but a request for a few pages for a lost animal tends to get a yes, and each of those places can then display a copy as well.

How many pages to print first

A sensible first batch is 30 to 50 copies. Because a flyer layout fits two on a page, 25 sheets gives you 50 flyers to hand out, and you can use full-size posters for the intersections. If you are searching for a cat, use more of your budget on the houses closest to the escape point. If you are searching for a dog, use more on the roads leading away from it. Print a second batch only once you know which areas are worth going back to, because new sightings can move the whole search.

What to bring

Take the PDF in two places, such as your phone and your email. Bring a card, tape, a stapler if the location permits it, and a marker for handwritten updates. If you are using tear-off tabs, take a pair of scissors or cut them when you get home. Ask the shop for a box lid to carry the stack; a loose pile of flyers in the rain is a quick way to lose the lot.

Check before you leave the shop

Hold one copy at arm’s length and read the phone number aloud. Compare it digit by digit with your actual number, and have someone else do it too. A single wrong digit on fifty flyers is the most expensive mistake you can make here, and it is easy to miss when you are tired and upset. Check the date and the cross streets the same way.
