What to say when you knock on doors about a lost pet

Say who you are, what is missing, and ask one specific favor: check the shed and the camera. Here are scripts you can use.

A script you can use

When you knock on doors about a lost pet, say it in about ten seconds: Hi, I live on Oak Street. My gray cat got out on Tuesday night. Could you check your garage and shed tonight, and look at your doorbell camera from Tuesday around 9? Here is a flyer with my number. Then thank them and go. A specific request works better than saying have you seen my cat, because most people say no without thinking. People will do a small task when you ask for it, and a flyer in their hand lets them follow through.

Pick your time

Early evening and weekends are the best time, as more people are home. Avoid knocking late at night or very early, which can alarm people. Dress as yourself, and bring a child or partner if you can, since a stranger with a family member seems less of a threat. Stand back from the door after you knock and hold the flyer where it can be seen through a window or a doorbell camera. If there is a no-soliciting sign, respect it and do not knock, or leave a flyer only if it is allowed.

Ask for the right thing

For a cat, ask people to check garages, sheds, crawl spaces, under decks and any place that was opened recently. Lost cats are often near home, and a cat can be shut in by accident. For a dog, ask them to report any dog that has been around, and to look at their back gardens. Give one instruction: please do not chase, call or text me right away. If you can, ask whether you can look yourself. People who are too busy to check their own shed may give you permission to take a quick look.

How to ask about cameras

Doorbell and yard cameras can show which direction your pet went and when. Be precise: Would you mind checking your camera for Tuesday between 8 and 10 p.m.? I am trying to see which way my cat went. Give the exact hours, so it will take them only minutes. Ask them to send you any clip or still image, and offer your number. Some camera systems only keep footage for a limited time, so ask soon. Do not ask to see footage for other reasons, and do not post a neighbor’s clip publicly without permission.

If nobody answers

Leave a flyer at the door, wedged where the wind cannot take it, or hand it to a neighbor who knows them. Do not put it in or on a mailbox, because that breaks USPS rules unless you have paid postage. Keep a note of houses with no answer, and try those again another evening. Write a short handwritten note on the flyer if you have time: Please check your shed. Thank you, Oak St neighbor. A personal note is less likely to be thrown away with the junk mail.

Dealing with apartments and businesses

In an apartment building, ask the manager first. They can email tenants, put up a notice in the elevator or lobby and let you into shared areas like the garage. Do not walk the halls knocking on every door without asking. At a business, ask to see the manager. Explain that you need only a spot on the board, and ask if staff can check loading docks and dumpster areas, where animals hide. Night cleaners and security guards are often worth meeting, since they are outside when most people are not.

Keep it safe

Go in pairs when you can, especially after dark or in areas you do not know. Do not enter anyone’s home. Stay on the walkway unless you are invited. Do not give out your full address unless you must; your street name is enough. If somebody says they have your pet, follow the usual checks, and meet in a public place. Keep your own phone charged, and let another person know which streets you are on.

Keep a record

Carry a printed street list or a phone note, and mark each house as spoken to, flyer left, or no contact. That lets you go back in a few days without repeating work, and it lets helpers take a street of their own. Write down anyone who said they saw something, with the date, the time and the direction. Go back to those people first. A second visit after a few days can get better results, because people have had time to think, and they will know that you are still looking.
