How much does it cost to get your dog back from the pound?

Published first-impound fees we checked run from $25 to $120, plus $10 to $30 a day for boarding, and some agencies add rabies shots, microchips or a license.

What published fee schedules show

There is no national price. The first-impound fees we found on published schedules run from $25 to $120, and daily boarding runs from $10 to $30. A short stay at a lower-cost agency can come to under $100. A longer stay, a repeat impound or required add-ons can push it much higher. The amounts below come from the agencies’ own schedules or pages, and every one was read in October 2026. Fees change often, and the only number that counts is the one your shelter quotes you. Call before you go and ask for a total as of today. This is general information, not legal advice.

What the bill is made of

Most reclaim bills have the same parts. There is an impound fee, charged once per stay and usually higher for repeat impounds. There is a boarding fee, charged per day or per night. Then there are conditional items: a rabies shot if you cannot prove your dog is current, a microchip if your area requires one, and a dog license if yours is missing or expired. Some agencies also add a deposit for an unaltered dog. Separate citations can sit on top of all this. Guilford County, North Carolina, says citation payment is due at pickup, and Charlotte lists leash-law citations starting at $50 for a first offense.

Schedules with a stated date

Osceola County, Florida, schedule effective October 1, 2026, by Resolution 26-019R: impound $35 for a first offense, $60 for a second, $85 for a third and later. Dog board is $14 a day, rabies vaccination $16, microchipping $15, and a one-year county tag $10. San Luis Obispo County, California, Schedule B effective July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027: dog impound $120 for a first, $150 for a second, $170 for a third, $200 for each one after. The schedule also lists a first-impound waiver for dogs wearing a current license tag and a discount for dogs with current ID or a working microchip. Collin County, Texas, adopted schedule for fiscal 2025: $30 for a first impound not redeemed within 24 hours, then $50, $70, $90 and $110, plus $10 a day for boarding and $15 for a microchip. Later Collin County schedules changed these amounts, so check the current one.

Agency pages with no stated date

These pages show no schedule date, so we can only say what they listed in October 2026. Spokane County, Washington: $55 for a first impound, $100 for a second, $150 for a third, counted on a 365-day cycle, plus $20 per 24 hours. Charlotte, North Carolina: $40 reclaim fee, $25 a day board, $15 rabies, $10 microchip, and a license from $10. Loudoun County, Virginia: $35 for a first impound by an officer, $75 for two or more, and $15 a day board for dogs. Livingston County, Michigan: $25, $50 and $100 by offense, and $25 a day board. San Diego Humane Society: $40 impound, $30 a day, $30 microchip, $30 rabies, and a $60 spay or neuter deposit that is refundable with proof within 30 days.

Two worked examples

The arithmetic is simple, and it shows how days add up. Take a first impound in Osceola County with three days of board: $35 plus $42 comes to $77. If you cannot show proof of rabies vaccination and a shot is needed, that adds $16, for $93. Take the same three days in Charlotte: $40 plus $75 comes to $115. Add rabies and a microchip and you reach $140, before any license. Agencies count days in different ways, so these are illustrations and not quotes. A dog left for a week in Charlotte would add $100 in board compared with three days.

State law can set a floor

Some states set minimum fees and leave the rest to local government. New York’s Agriculture and Markets Law section 117 sets at least $10 for a first impound. A second impound within a year is at least $20 for the first 24 hours plus $3 for each extra 24 hours. A third or later is at least $30 plus $3 a day. The same section lets a municipality set fees in any amount by local law, so the statute will not tell you what a New York shelter will charge. Your local agency’s number is the one to use.

How to pay less

Move fast, because board is usually the part you can control. Some agencies reward speed and ID. San Diego Humane Society says reclaim fees may be waived for a dog that is spayed or neutered, licensed, microchipped and picked up on its first day in care. Collin County’s schedule treats redemption within 24 hours differently. San Luis Obispo’s waiver goes to dogs wearing a current license tag. Bring your rabies certificate on paper: Charlotte says the tag does not count. If you cannot cover the bill, ask before the hold ends: Is there a payment plan, a fee waiver or a voucher program? Livingston County says all fees must be paid before release, so do not leave this until pickup day.

Pay at the counter

San Diego Humane Society warns of scammers calling pet owners from blocked numbers, claiming a lost pet needs emergency surgery and asking for payment through Zelle or similar apps. It says it will never request urgent payment that way. The Better Business Bureau has warned about similar lost pet text scams. If someone calls about a fee, hang up and phone the shelter on a number you looked up yourself. Pay in person or through the agency’s official system, and keep the receipt. It also becomes part of your record that this dog is yours.
