Call the fire department’s non-emergency line first, then animal control. If neither will come, a plumber’s camera and a handyman can find the cat and open the wall.
Who to call first
Call your fire department’s non-emergency number and say: There’s a cat trapped inside a wall at this address. We can hear it, and it can’t get out. Do you handle this? US fire crews have cut cats out of walls many times, as the cases below show, though departments differ and some may refuse. If they say no, call animal control, then a plumber or handyman with an inspection camera. If you rent, call your landlord at the same time, and if the wall is shared, tell your neighbor. Do not call 911 for the cat alone, unless the situation also puts a person at risk. Try not to wait until tomorrow. A cat wedged in a wall usually has no water, and Cats Protection says a cat can be dehydrated within 24 hours.
Find out where it is
Anyone you call will want to know the spot, so work that out while you wait. Turn off the TV, fans, the dishwasher and anything else that hums. Then go along the wall, slowly, listening at each stud bay, and try the room on the other side and the floor above and below. Mark the loudest place with tape. Humane World for Animals suggests an amplified listening device or a plumber’s camera for spaces you can’t reach. In Hesperia, California in 2026, county firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to find a kitten behind drywall. Be sure it is a cat before anyone cuts. Scratching with no meow may well be a squirrel, rodent or raccoon, which is a job for a wildlife service.
Work out how it got in
How the cat got in tells you where it is and whether it can get out alone. Check any open attic hatch, a gap around a pipe, a missing vent cover, a plumbing access panel behind a tub, an unfinished basement ceiling, a dryer vent and a recent repair. In Hesperia, firefighters thought the kitten had probably fallen from the attic. In a 2017 case reported by WISH-TV, a cat fell down a plumbing chase and got stuck under a bathtub. A cat that dropped down a shaft probably cannot climb back. A cat that squeezed in sideways may be able to back out, so leave that entrance open and keep it clear. Do not block it or fix it yet. Put smelly food and water at the entrance, and give it an hour of quiet.
What firefighters have done
News reports show how varied the method can be. In Hyannis, Massachusetts in 2020, firefighters freed a cat wedged in a 6-inch gap by cutting through the drywall of the apartment next door. In Bremerton, Washington in 2015, a cat was wedged behind a water heater. Firefighters planned to cut drywall, found pipes in the wall, and instead shut off the power and water, drained the heater and pulled it away so that the cat could climb out. In Plantation, Florida in 2016, firefighters chipped at a concrete wall for hours to reach a cat stuck for a reported three to four days. In Irvine, California in 2014, animal control sedated a cat between two walls before firefighters cut through the masonry.
If the fire department says no
There is no national rule, and our post on a cat stuck in a tree shows how much policies can differ. Ask whether animal control or a local rescue group can help, and whether they know of someone who does this. Then call a plumber, drain service or home inspector and ask: Do you have an inspection camera that can go through a small hole? A handyman or drywall contractor can then make the opening. Drywall is the easy case. In Hesperia the damage was minor. Masonry, as the cases above show, is much slower. Ask for the price before work starts, and ask if they can cut a neat square to make the patch easier.
Before anyone cuts
Walls hold wiring and pipes, as the Bremerton crew found. Turn off the power to that wall at the breaker panel, and know where the water shutoff is. Cut shallow, near the taped mark, away from outlets and switches. Start with a small inspection hole and look before widening it, since the cat may be pressed against the wall. In a home built before 1978, the paint may contain lead. The EPA says anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those homes must be lead-safe certified, while homeowners doing their own work are generally not covered. Ask your contractor, and keep children away from any dust.
If you rent
You probably should not cut a wall yourself, and in a shared building the cat may be on someone else’s side of it. Tell your landlord or property manager in writing right away, with a text or email saying what you can hear and when it started. In Bremerton, the owner could not get help from the landlord and called the fire department, which came. Ask your neighbor if you can listen from their unit, because the Hyannis cat was reached from next door. Rights and costs for damage vary by state and lease, so ask your landlord or your local tenant agency rather than assuming. This is general information, not legal advice.
While you wait, and after
Do not pour water into the gap, push things down it, or use noise or smoke to move the cat, because it can go deeper. When the wall opens, have a carrier and a thick towel ready, since a scared cat can bolt or bite. Dr. Liz Stelow of UC Davis warns that a scared animal can turn aggressive very quickly. Then call your vet, say how long the cat was stuck, and ask if it should be seen today. Once it is out, find and close the way in, after you are certain that no other animals are inside, including kittens.
